Flame-adjacent Whopper on a backyard grate

Flame-adjacent Whopper on a backyard grate

By Jordan Hale · Sep 4, 2026

The brief

A Whopper is a garden burger that happens to have flame. Keep the produce loud and the patty a little oversized.

Ingredients

  • 10-ounce 80/20 patty, loosely packed
  • Sesame bun, mayo, ketchup
  • Thick tomato, iceberg leaf, raw onion ring, pickle chips

Method

  1. Charcoal if you have it. Gas if you do not. High heat, lid off, one confident flip.
  2. Toast the bun over the same grate.
  3. Mayo on the crown, ketchup on the heel. Do not overthink the stack.

The homemade version tastes more like a cookout than a wrapper, which is the point.

Gas grill here. I still got enough char that it smelled like the parking lot in a good way.
